A Museum for Children and Families
Lied Discovery Children’s Museum was founded as a private, nonprofit educational institution in 1984 by the Junior League of Las Vegas and the former Allied Arts Council, and opened to the public in 1990 thanks to the construction of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library building and the generosity of the Lied Foundation Trust. The museum currently is located in the historic Cultural Corridor in downtown Las Vegas, on Las Vegas Boulevard North across from Cashman Center. In its 20 years, the children’s museum has grown into a leading Las Vegas destination for family fun and a critical community asset that complements and enhances the educational experience of children and families through interactive, hands-on exhibits and programs.
In August of 2010, officials from the museum and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts announced the creation of the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center, to be constructed in Symphony Park.
This will serve as the future home of the new Discovery Children’s Museum, forming a perfect union of arts, culture and education for the children and families of Southern Nevada. The new facility is scheduled to open to the public in late 2012, when the museum’s mission “to ignite a love lifelong learning” will be elevated to a new standard of excellence.
Facility
The 58,000-square-foot, three-story Discovery Children’s Museum will be outfitted with all-new interactive exhibits to fill its nine themed exhibit halls and galleries. Modern, larger exhibit and administrative spaces will allow for expanded traveling exhibition opportunities, limitless hands-on workshop experiences and more enhanced programming.
