Designed by world renowned architect David M. Schwarz, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts will be a world-class performing arts center that will expose thousands to the power of the arts. Named in honor of Fred W. and Mary B. Smith, the cultural campus will be home to resident companies including Nevada Ballet Theatre and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. The Center also plans to present first-run touring attractions from around the world.
Set on nearly five-acres, the Center will house several performance venues and an education facility. Its venues will include the 2,050-seat Reynolds Hall, a 300-seat cabaret theater overlooking Symphony Park and a 200-seat studio theater, ideal for rehearsals, children’s theater and community events.
The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation announced the largest donation in state history in Oct. 2007 – a $100 million gift to support the Center’s construction. This gift surpassed the Foundation’s initial gift to The Smith Center of $50 million in 2005. Funded in part by a public-private partnership that includes a special rental car tax, which has resulted in a bond of $105 million. The Center is raising the balance of the funds needed to open and operate from private, corporate and foundation contributions. Construction began in May 2009 and the Center is scheduled to open in early 2012.
