Symphony Park Lecture Series: The Urban Vibe
Downtown devotees, business owners and residents gathered at the fourth installment of the Symphony Park Lecture Series on October 13. More than 200 individuals, including Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian, Councilman Steve Ross and Councilman Ricki Barlow participated in a vibrant discussion led by Las Vegas CityLife editor, Steve Sebelius. The panel included outspoken and passionate downtown stakeholders, including Andrew Kiraly, editor of Desert Companion; Jennifer Cornthwaite, co-owner of The Beat Coffeehouse and Emergency Arts; Quentin Abramo, president of Faciliteq; Brett Sperry, owner of Brett Wesley Gallery; Dan Maddux, CEO of MEET Las Vegas; James Reza, GM of Globe Salon; Jennifer Henry, owner of FLOCKFLOCKFLOCK; and John Curtas, restaurant critic/food writer.
The lecture was preceded by a wine bar hosted by Inhabit Design, Newland and Faiss Foley Warren Public Relations. The fun and lively cocktail reception included vintage fashions by Jennifer Henry and FLOCKFLOCKFLOCK with hair and make-up provided by Globe Salon.
Panelists articulately expressed their passion for living and working downtown, citing the strong sense of community and connection with neighbors and area businesses. They also shared mutual fulfillment from contributing to the revitalization of the area that is on its way to becoming a cultural center and a gathering place for locals – in direct contrast to the Strip which is designed for tourists. The discussion wrapped up with opinions about what downtown needs next - from a greater variety of dining options to increased awareness of its cultural offerings.
The Symphony Park Lectures Series, co-sponsored by CityLife and KNPR, is a quarterly program to engage the local community in compelling and pertinent topics germane to Symphony Park, its anchor projects and other quality of life issues in Las Vegas. The event is presented by the city of Las Vegas Office of Business Development and Newland.
