Backstage with The Smith Center design team

On March 9, the Symphony Park lecture will feature an up-close look at how the various design disciplines are converging within The Smith Center to create a world-class stage  - with world-class sound  - and a world-class look.

The evening is headlined by David M. Schwarz, the renowned Washington, D.C.-based architect responsible for The Smith Center’s classic art-deco style. Schwarz, whose award-winning firm handles iconic cultural, institutional, commercial, sports, educational and residential projects across the US, is widely known for his design of many of the country’s landmark opera houses, performance halls and major sports arenas and parks.

Joining Schwarz are Joshua Dachs from New York City-based Fisher Dachs Associates, one of the world’s leading theatre planning and design firms; and Paul Scarbrough, principal designer with Akustiks, a renowned consulting firm specializing in the acoustical design of performing arts facilities of all sizes and types.

Smith Center CEO Myron Martin will lead a lively discussion of these three foremost design principals whose distinctive and unique skills are combining to create what will become one of the most beautiful and state-of-the-art performance centers in the country.

“The art of theatre design and sound design are highly specialized fields,” said Martin. “We have one opportunity to do it right – to make The Smith Center one of the most revered and desirable performing arts centers in the world for both performers and audience members. This team leads the field in both expertise and experience. We know the end result will be spectacular.”

The lecture presentation begins at 5:30pm at the Fifth Street School, 401 So. Fourth Street. The Symphony Park lecture series is free and open to the public with sponsorship provided by Las Vegas CityLife and Nevada Public Radio.
