Gallery exhibits winning photos of downtown photo competition
Winning photographs from the inaugural CAPTURE DOWNTOWN! Photo Competition were displayed throughout the month of November at a free exhibit inside Emergency Arts at 501 Fremont St. From more than 300 photo submissions, the 23 winning photographs were selected by a jury of professional photographers, with one People’s Choice award-winning photograph selected via an online public vote. All first place winners were honored by Mayor Carolyn Goodman at the Symphony Park Lecture on October 12.
Professional and amateur winners were selected in three categories: Lifestyle: everyday life/work/play in downtown Las Vegas; Stars: interesting people who live/work downtown; and Icons: downtown landmarks, neon signs and historic buildings.
First place winners included Michael Lane, Stephanie Gonzales, Todd Korgan, Mario P. Galvez, Myron Hensel, and Shannon Dorn.
Second place winners included Derek Sola, Antonio Gomez, Dustin M. Wax, and Grant Terry.
Third place winners included Mikayla Whitmore, Lizter Van Orman, and Jennifer Ortiz – whose photo also won the People’s Choice award.
Honorable Mention winners’ photographs were also on display.
The competition is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency, Symphony Park, Newland and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The following businesses also graciously supported the competition by donating prizes:
Globe Salon, Triple George Grill, Springs Preserve, Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas Design Center, Meadows Mall, Piero’s, Faiss Foley Warren Public Relations, Downtown Cocktail Room, The Beat Coffeehouse and Records, Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, Mundo, Bar + Bistro, Lola’s Louisiana Kitchen, Chicago Joe’s Restaurant, The Lady Silvia, Resnicks Grocery, Insert Coin(s), Tinoco’s Kitchen, Hennessey’s Las Vegas, Vanguard Lounge, and Artifice.
